Guatemalan Survey of Family Health (EGSF), 1995
Encuesta Guatemalteca de Salud Familiar
The 1995 Guatemalan Survey of Family
Health, in Spanish Encuesta Guatemalteca de Salud Familiar
(EGSF),
was designed and conducted by
Noreen Goldman
at OPR, Princeton University, and
Anne Pebley at Rand.
in collaboration with INCAP, the
Nutritional Institute of Central America and Panama, in Guatemala, with
funding from NICHD, the
National Institute of Child Health and Human
Development.
The survey is described in greater detail on
the Rand Corporation
Family Life
Surveys page. Rand also maintains a
EGSF bibliography.
EGSF Data Files Maintained at OPR
Those outside OPR who wish to use the public use EGSF data must download the data
from the
Rand archive.
Information about ordering the documentation is available at the same site.
you can click here for a list of all files maintained at OPR.
There are three subdirectories containing the public release data from Rand,
the raw data release that was used for much of the early analysis at OPR
before the public release was available, and several files derived from the
data by researchers at OPR and which may prove useful to those pursuing
similar research. None of the data maintained at OPR is available for
public distribution.
Public Use files
The public use version of the data is available in SAS and Stata formats.
Documentation exists only in printed form and must be ordered from the
RAND Corporation. The OPR library has copies of the documentation for
perusal at OPR.
You can click here for a list of the Public Use files.
Files derived from the EGSF survey data
Several people involved in the project produced data files that may be
useful to others at OPR who want to analyze the EGSF data. These include
flat files (one per child) created from the very complex hierarchical files
containing Section D (prenatal care and delivery) and Section E (child
morbidity) of the questionnaire; more detailed information collected about
medicines mentioned in Section E that were used to treat child illnesses;
and summaries of information about communities,
medical providers and health facilities extracted from the key informant
(CLAVES) surveys.
These data, while documented in a limited fashion, are not fully
supported by the OPR data archive. It may be necessary to consult the
researchers who created the files for further information.
For more detailed information about the quantitative data,
see derived data files at OPR.
You can click here for a list of these files.
Transcripts of interviews from qualitative survey
Prior to the collection of the Guatemala Survey of Family Health (EGSF,
1995), a qualitative study was carried out in four rural communities during
May and June of 1994. The objective of the
study was to learn more about how families think about and cope with child
and maternal illness. Interviews were recorded in two ways: (1) tape recording
and (2) abbreviated field notes. The tape recordings were translated into
Spanish (for those in indigenous languages) and transcribed into WordPerfect
computer files. These WordPerfect files (a total of 137) are available to
researchers at OPR only.
Those wishing to use the qualitative survey data should consult Noreen
Goldman at OPR.
For more detailed information about the qualitative data, see
qualitative survey files at OPR.
