Princeton European Fertility Project:
List of Countries in Thirty-Year File
The following list shows all of the countries contained in the
Thirty-Year data file. Data are included for each country at four
points in time. The points in time are intended to be 1870, 1900,
1930 and 1960. For a particular country, the actual points in time
may be different from these. The actual dates used are not coded in
the data, but may be seen in the following list. In a few cases, the
same year of data is used twice to represent two points in time.
Where boundary changes mandate, data from
more than series are included; each country then appears multiple
times in the data, with each series contributing one or more of the
years of data. When a country is represented by more than one
series, the data for years other than the years available for that
series are zeros.
For every country, the first record in the series (area number 0)
represents the
entire country. This record is followed by a varying number of
records for each of the constituent areas for that country and
series. The number of
areas for a series is in the same as in the Master File, except that areas
representing alternative boundaries or aggregations of other areas
were omitted from the Thirty-Year file. In the Thirty-Year file, there is only one record for
each area, containing the fertility indices for four points in time.
There are also no separate records for urban and rural areas in the
Thirty-Year file.
A few countries in the following list are not subdivided into
areas: Luxemburg, Albania, and Iceland. These still have a total
area (area 0) record and one regional area (area 1) record, which are
identical.
The names given in the list are exactly as they appear in the
data. The number preceding the country name is the country code
found in columns 1-2 of both the Master File and the Thirty-Year
File. Following the name of the country and the series used, are the
total number of areas found in the data (including the area representing the
whole country) and the actual dates used for that country and series.
