Coale Collection Dedicated

On June 25, 2002, the demographic research library was named The Ansley J. Coale Population Research Collection in a nice ceremony attended by Ansley Coale and members of his family.

Outgoing OPR Director Marta Tienda launched the proceedings by reading a plaque that will identify the collection, a replica of which was given to Ansley. (Click on the thumbnails to see larger images.)

Senior Research Demographer Charles F. Westoff reminded the audience of Ansley's distinguished research career and his many contributions to the field of demography and to OPR.

James Trussell, incoming OPR Director, reflected on what a privilege it was to have had Ansley as a mentor and added a few humorous notes, recalling how boring all the numbers in "Model Life Tables" were.

Ansley Coale laughed at James Trussell's remarks. Sitting next to him are his wife Sue Coale and son Rob Coale. Behind him is Paul Demeny, co-author of "Model Life Tables"

Sue Coale thanked the audience on behalf of the family. She recalled that Marion Levy once described OPR as a mini-university, with its own faculty and students ... and its very own library.

Contribute!

OPR has created an endowment to support the development of the Coale Collection in years to come.

This account will be used exclusively to purchase books and monographs in population studies to supplement the acquisition budget from the general library.
